What Real ID rules. What you need to know

If you’re a travel nurse or healthcare traveler who frequently flies to assignment locations, a major change is coming to domestic air travel in the U.S. that you need to prepare for. Starting May 7, 2025, the REAL ID Act will take full effect, requiring all travelers aged 18 and older to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another accepted form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, when boarding domestic flights.

REAL ID Act! What is it?

The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to establish minimum security standards for state-issued identification cards and driver’s licenses. While the enforcement deadline has been extended several times, it is now officially set for May 7, 2025. After this date, travelers using a standard driver’s license without the REAL ID marking will not be allowed through airport security for domestic flights.

How to Get a REAL ID

If your current driver’s license is not REAL ID-compliant, now is the time to apply. Follow these steps to ensure you’re ready before the deadline:

  1. Check Your ID – Look for a star in the upper corner of your driver’s license. If it’s not there, your ID may not be REAL ID-compliant.
  2. Gather Required Documents – To apply for a REAL ID, you will need:
    • Proof of identity (such as a valid U.S. passport or birth certificate)
    • Social Security card or proof of Social Security number
    • Two documents showing proof of residency (utility bill, rental agreement, etc.)
  3. Visit Your Local DMV – Make an appointment at your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office to submit your application.
  4. Plan for Processing Time – Processing times may vary, so don’t wait until the last minute!

For healthcare travelers who already have a valid passport, TSA-approved identification, or military ID, a REAL ID may not be necessary for domestic flights. However, having one ensures an easy and flexible travel experience.

  • Keep digital copies: Store digital copies of important documents (passport, REAL ID, Social Security card) in a secure cloud service in case you need them.
  • Consider alternative IDs: If you don’t want to update your driver’s license, carrying a passport is a great alternative.
